As if defeat in Delhi was not enough, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered the most embarassing loss in Bihar polls on which the party had pinned all its hopes.

What with even Prime Minister Narendra Modi going all out to woo voters by campaigning in a record number of rallies (read 40), the party badly wanted the Bihar polls to turn its fortune around. But that was not to be as the people of Bihar willed otherwise.

So what went wrong for the BJP? Well, one look at the speeches at the BJP rallies in Bihar and it's not difficult to figure out why.

BJP was trying to portray Muslims as anti-nationalist which boomeranged. What also cut the ground from under the party's feet was the crackdown on beef eaters which became a major issue. The last straw in the hat was when the PM chose to stay mum on the issue.

Besides, the artistes returning their awards became the most controversial topic which led to a raging debate on intolerance.

All this and the attitude of BJP leaders itself led to the party's downfall in Bihar polls. Modi's detractors have already started sounding the alarm bells saying the PM's image has suffered a major blow following the party's defeat in Delhi as well as Bihar.

Meanwhile, to do some damage control and get the de-motivated leaders on track, Modi is country hopping trying to woo the Indian diaspora. However, we hear the response has been lukewarm while compared to his other foreign trips where the NRIs rolled out a red carpet for him.

It would be interesting to watch how Modi would salvage the reputation of BJP and also gain back confidence of voters given that he intends to stay in power for a few more years.
