Indian cricket champion Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who on Sunday retired from the international cricket, will be honored with the highest civilian award of our nation Bharat Ratna.
Government informed in a press release, today that "Sachin Tendulkar is undoubtedly an outstanding cricketer - a living legend who has inspired millions across the globe. During the last 24 years, since the young age of 16 years, Tendulkar has played cricket across the world and won laurels for our country. He has been a true ambassador of India in the world of sports.
The 40-year-old icon, who called time on his glittering international career today, was chosen for the top award soon after his farewell Test against the West Indies ended in Mumbai.
A brief statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson Venu Rajamony said the President has awarded the Bharat Ratna to Tendulkar, who retired from the International cricket today.
Tendulkar bows out as the most successful batsman in international cricket with 15,921 runs in 200 Tests. In his ODI career, which he needed last year, Tendulkar amassed 18,426 runs in 463 matches.
The Mumbaikar is the only batsman in international cricket to score 100 centuries. He was the first batsman to get a double hundred in one-dayers.
"His achievements in cricket are supreme, the records set by him are remarkable, and the spirit of sportsmanship displayed by him commendable. That he has been honored with several awards is testimony to his extraordinary brilliance as a sportsman," the release added.
