Hyderabad: Union Minister for Power and Coal Piyush Goyal on Sunday said that the Centre was ready to come to the rescue of Telangana State from power crisis which has become a major hurdle to achieve the targets for development of the new State.
Addressing the press through video conference from New Delhi, he said a thermal project with an installed capacity of 1,600 MW would be established in the first phase under the proposed 400 mw unit to be set up in Telangana State by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).
He said the Centre had promised to set up the thermal power unit in Telangana when Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao met him on Saturday in New Delhi. The TS government also came forward to allot 5,000 acres of land in Mahbubnagar for the project.
Stating that the Centre was more concerned about the power shortage being faced by Telangana after the division of the State, Goyal said required coal would also be supplied to the State to increase the installed capacity of the existing thermal power projects. Presently, the total installed capacity of the thermal projects in the State is 2,750 MW. To tide over the power crisis, government is required to double the installed capacity. Due to non availability of coal, the Telangana government is yet to upgrade the capacity.
Goyal said Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments had been asked to resolve the power sharing issue in accordance with the AP Reorganisation Act. He claimed that AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had agreed to work in tandem with the TS government to resolve power issues.
Referring to the shortage of gas supply to the gas-based power projects in AP which were left idle for the last two years, the Minister said since the gas production had declined, GAIL (Gas Authority of India Limited) was not in a position to supply required fuel to the units at this point of time.
