The Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the left parties decided to launch a movement from Gajwel, the home constituency of the Chief Minister, K Chandrashekar Rao. Leaders of the opposition parties at the all-party meeting here alleged that the TRS government was trying its fill the coffers by selling cheap liquor without being concerned on its impact on people.

They urged the government to immediately drop the proposal as it would have serious social and financial consequences for the poor. Speaking to The Hans India, Prof P L Vishveshwar Rao, chairman, Anti-Cheap Liquor Movement, said that different committees would be formed at district level. The State committee would be constituted with 55 social organisations.

Representation would be given to political parties too. “We will be holding another meeting on Monday to chalk out action plan against the cheap liquor,” he said. Addressing the meeting, TPCC president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy accused the TRS Government of playing with the lives and health of poor people by promoting cheap liquor. He demanded that the government convene an All Party meeting on the issue to take the views of opposition parties on the proposed policy.

Telangana TDP Legislature Party leader Errabelli Dayakar Rao advised that the campaign against cheap liquor policy should be launched from Gajwel, the constituency represented by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao himself. He said it was wrong to put the thousands of poor lives at stake to generate revenues.

Meanwhile, BJP's women activists staged a sit-in at the excise department office at Nampally here on Saturday to protest cheap liquor. Tension prevailed when police tried to remove the protestors. BJP leader K. Lakshman said the government was playing with the lives of people by introducing cheap liquor. The leaders of Left Parties and other NGOs too have announced their support for joint agitation against the proposed policy.
