Mahabubnagar: The Shadnagar constituency headquarters in Mahabubnagar district which is known for providing means of livelihood to those working hard has come a long way. It has witnessed a downward slide and become rather infamous for illegal activities, with mushrooming growth of fraudulent companies.

Lured by offers of easy money, the police and Revenue officials prefer to look the other way. They have become so callous that what happens to the people is immaterial to them. Kothur, Farooqnagar, Mogiligidda and Kesampet mandals in the constituency are advanced to some extent. Proximity to the State capital and the international airport and inclusion of the constituency in GHMC have proved to be a boon for the people of Shadnagar.

However, these factors also helped ushering of illegal activities, like manufacture of fake gutkha on the outskirts of Mogiligidda. The police were shocked to learn that this unit, located in a small farm house, was making and selling about 50 lakh fake gutkha packets of brands like Goa, RC, Sitara, XXX, Kings and Vazeer. Red sanders logs worth Rs 1 crore and a spurious liquor manufacturing company were also found in the past near this factory.

Local residents were also in for a rude shock after this came to light. Five persons were running the factory. Four of them were arrested by the police, while the fifth and the main accused, Zaheeruddin is absconding. He is said to live abroad for 15 days and remain in the country for the rest of the month, as found by the police.

Many unauthorised companies are stated to be in operation in Kothur, Farooqnagar, Mogiligidda and Kesampet areas, with high compound walls built around them to bar inquisitive eyes, and heavy security. Even the police have to strive to gain entry into these illegal units.

Workers there are mostly from Bihar, Rajasthan and Haryana. If a worker is killed in an accident the issue would be silently settled. Locals appeal the authorities concerned to curb these anti-social activities and save the neighbourhood.
