Calamity waiting to happen

Hyderabad: The Hans India team stumbled upon another death trap on the city roads in the form of an overflowing manhole, which has even damaged the CC road next to it on the busy stretch in Nacharam.

Residents of Nacharam claim that Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation authorities have turned a blind eye to the issue since January this year and the damaged manhole has the capacity to gobble up even a four-wheeler.

Thousands of commuters travel through the busy Bhavani Nagar stretch which connects Nacharam and Mallapur. Residents here rue that corporation officials as a part of nala de-siltation not only damaged both the nala and the manhole on the prime road in the Nacharam road, but also the CC road. Interestingly, GHMC authorities are yet to restore the damaged grills of the nala and re-construct the damaged structure.

The over-flowing manhole has been eroding the CC road every month. The furiously overflowing manhole could not only gobble up school children but also heavy motor vehicles. And for gullible pedestrians, they can easily fall prey to the gaping manhole after sunset or even during a rainy day.

K Venu, a software engineer working in MNC said, "The dangerous nala is a very bad site for road accidents. It has the capacity to claim several lives at a time. It was the GHMC authorities who have damaged the grills, manhole and the nala". He alleged that despite several complaints with the GHMC, the issue remains unresolved for even months.

A push cart vendor A Jaya said, “Several minor accidents have been witnessed in the area. During rainy season, the overflowing manhole swallows everything in its vicinity." In addition, the meat shops adjacent to the road have been using this open stretch of the nala to dump animal remains. This has compounded the problem even more, she added.

When contacted, GHMC officials said that the nala de-silting was taken up as a part of the 100-day action plan. They claimed to have finished 99 per cent of the de-silting works and would take up the repairing works at the earliest. However, no time period or date has been suggested by officials to carry out repairs here.
