Hyderabad: Confederation of All Telangana Consumer Organisations (CATCO) demanded that the Union government introduce Consumer Protection Amendment Act (CPAA) bill - 2016 during the monsoon session as it has been pending for the past two years.

Speaking at a workshop on “Recent Trends in Consumer Protection Laws, Justice Challa Kodandaram asked the consumers to update their knowledge and file cases with appropriate consumer forums.

Kodandaram said that filing of irrelevant cases before consumer forums would lead to waste of time for forums. Complaints against doctors and hospitals must be filed after taking second opinion and based on proper evidence, otherwise the cases may become counterproductive, the justice said.

Kodandaram advised the consumer organisations to concentrate to bring awareness among college students and school going children so that the next generation would be saved from food adulteration and its negative impact.

P Melvin Reddy, Deputy Agriculture Marketing Adviser, recalling an incident, said for the first time in the Indian history, he had recommended to the Union government to cancel Agmark licence of a Hyderabad based producer who indulged in food adulteration. He has said that food adulteration cannot be controlled unless the concerned officials take stringent action against the manufacturers of food products.

Meanwhile at a meeting, V Gowri Shanker Rao was elected unanimously as Chairman of CATCO; Shankaralal Chourasia as General Secretary and Yashodhar Raju asTreasurer. The new body demanded the State and Union governments to fill all posts of Food Safety Officers and vacant posts in Legal Meteorology Department.
