Snake rescue calls on the rise in Hyd
Snake menace in the city is rapidly increasing, according to Friends of Snake Society (FoSS), the organisation receives around 100 rescue calls on a daily basis. Last year alone, approximately 3,500 snakes were rescued from the twin cities. Most of the complaints come from areas like Gachibowli, Kukatpally and LB Nagar.

Last year alone, approximately 3,500 snakes were rescued from the twin cities. Most of the complaints come from areas like Gachibowli, Kukatpally and LB Nagar.
General Secretary of Friends of Snakes Society Avinash Visvanathan said, “We get about 100 rescue calls a day and majority of them are from the city. Most of the snakes are either Cobra or rat snake. We try to rescue as many snakes as possible and relocate them to the sanctuaries that are advised by the Forest department.”
When enquired about snake bite victims, he said, “During the Monsoon season there is a rise in the number of cases. Osmania General Hospital and Gandhi Hospital receive most of these cases. Recently I found out that the Gandhi Hospital attended about 20 such victims in a month.”
The organisation regularly conducts awareness campaigns so that the citizens can avoid such accidents. Such incidents occur only due to carelessness and lack of awareness in the people, he added.
However, according to Vijayasarathy Srinivasan, surgeon at Osmania General Hospital, 90 per cent of the snakes are not venomous due to which most of the victims life is not in danger.
Confirming the FoSS claims, A Shankaran, Official of Special Duty, Forest Department said, “There are numerous snakes rescued every day and most of the rescued snakes are from the city. These snakes once captured are freed in areas where there is enough protection, shelter and water. Areas like Kawal Wildlife Sanctuary, Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary and Vikarabad are preferred places.”
