Hyderabad: The common man is seething with anger and it was palpable on the streets in the past few days, especially on Monday. The upward trend of fuel prices is hitting the man on the street the hardest. “These are the daily upgradations imposed by the government and not us. The customers, less knowing, blame us for this action”, said Md. Moin Hussain, the manager of BPCL, Abids. The price of petrol on September 1, (in Hyderabad) was 83.42 rupees, it was 74 in January. There has been a daily price revision for almost a year now.
“I sometimes fill my bike twice a day but if it goes beyond two times, I suffer. The prices haven’t decreased in the recent past”, said Obaid. “In 2017, there was a change of two or three rupees at a time but this year, the prices are changing on a daily basis. We sometimes go into a loss as we have to pay commission to the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL)”, said Mohan, the manager of a petrol pump at Panjagutta. “Even if rupees per dollar decrease, the government wouldn’t decrease the petrol prices. It’s only IOCL that avails profits”, said a passer-by.
“Even if the price is 83.42 rupees, I’ll have to pay 84 rupees,” said Hafsa. Raj, an Ola bike rider said, “I would fill a petrol of rupees two hundred each day but now I get the same quantity for a hundred rupees more.” “Petrol prices may soon emerge as a privilege for middle classes”, said Amani, a student. “I used to fill my tank for 500 rupees every week earlier and now I do the same for 650 now to travel almost 25 kms a day”, said Shravan.
