Bhadrachalam: Former CBI Joint Director VV Laxminarayana launched an innovative programme- 1 kg rice for 1 kg plastic- in the temple town on Wednesday to make it plastic-free.

With the help of local people and supporters, Laxminarayana went on a morning walk in the college grounds and cleaned the ground besides collecting plastic materials such as bottles, covers strewn on the ground with the support of morning walkers. On the occasion, he urged the people to keep their surroundings neat and clean and prevent the spread of diseases. He appealed to the people to use Panchayat dust bins.

Later, the former official visited the blood bank run by the Red Cross Society in the town and inspected the facilities. He lauded the Society members for rendering best services in the agency area. He also donated Rs 1 lakh to the Joint for Development Foundation for conducting various programmes to make the temple town plastic-free.

Bhadrachalam Sub-Collector Bhavesh Mishra, speaking at a programme, lauded the services of people striving to make the town plastic-free, and added that the government was totally supporting such initiatives.

Chamber of Commerce Secretary Kambhampati Suresh, noted personalities of the temple town GS Shankar Rao, Desappa, Srinivas, Bhupathi Rao, Tellam Venkat Rao, B Venkat Reddy, Veeraiah, Ch Laxminarayana, B Satish, G Bharathi, JD Foundation convenor Murali Mohan Kumar, K Naga Raju, TP Rao and others took part in the cleaning drive.
