Hyderabad: Municipal authorities have initiated the process of verification of Backward Classes voters for finalising reservation as the Court had directed the authorities to conduct elections to urban local bodies within five months.

According to sources in the Commissioner and Directorate of Municipal Administration, the officials have initiated the process of verification of BC voters in the wards in the districts.

A senior official said an action plan was already given to the municipalities through a circular specifying the time schedule for identifying the SC, ST and Women and BC voters in all the municipalities and municipal corporations for providing reservations to wards, taking up door to door survey etc. However, with successive elections in the State, the process got delayed, the official informed. The official said the enumeration has already started in some of the municipalities and soon all the other municipalities would also follow this.

The term of about 53 ULBs is coming to end on July 2 and government had merged some gram Panchayats into municipalities (upgrading 173 Gram Panchayats and merging 131 Gram Panchayats into adjoining 42 municipalities and corporations) apart from forming new municipalities.

Now there are 142 municipalities (68 new) and six corporations in the State and it would be interesting to see whether the government takes up elections to the municipalities whose term ends or all others by taking up amendment to the Municipal Act.

On the request of the State government, the High Court gave the government time of five months for completing the election. State government had sought 151 days for holding elections to all municipalities and corporations in the State.

The term of Karimnagar, Ramagundam and Nizamabad Corporations will end on July 2, 2019 whereas the terms of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) and Khammam would end in 2021 and it would be interesting to know whether the elections would be advanced in the other three corporation because the GHMC has released schedule for BC voter count and publication of draft and final list.

The officials said the decision would be taken by the government as it would have time till December.
