Income tax department had been very actively advertising and sending messages to PAN holders regarding payment of advance tax before March 15 failing which it can be paid by March 31with interest for the interim period. Even on filing your return, the department adds up the interest payable and finalises the assessment.

This seems to be unfair as majority of the taxpayers belong to salaried class where TDS is a responsibility of the employers which they finalise on the date of payment of salaries of March every year. Any additional tax due can be settled by the salaried taxpayer only at the time of ITR submission as most of them receive their respective Form 16 invariably well after June of that year.

One could see, with enough reason and application of mind that the salaried taxpayers who are the major contributors to the tax kitty do not deserve to be penalised with interest on the additional IT they remit at the time of filing ITR
