Hyderabad: In a first of its kind act, the Andhra Pradesh Assembly on Friday suspended YSRCP MLA R K Roja for one year from the Assembly for making “unparliamentary” remarks against Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

Moving a motion for her suspension, Legislative Affairs Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu said the member had crossed the Lakshman Rekha with her behaviour lowering the dignity and decorum of the House.

He said she had not only used offensive language but even her body language was aggressive. She has used words which include “Call Money CM”, “Kama CM” and the like.

The members’ remarks have gone into the records of the House, and unless such behaviour is put to an end, the sanctity of the house would be at stake, he pointed out. Proper conduct on the part of the members is a must to maintain dignity of the house, the minister said.

The incident happened when Roja along with about 20 other members of her party rushed into the well and moved nearer to the seat of the Chief Minister shouting slogans against the government to allow a discussion on the Call Money issue.

It was at this point of time that the YSRCP MLA was seen making some comments against the Chief Minister and also making aggressive gestures.

Taking exception to this, Labour Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu, Government Chief Whip Kalva Srinivasulu, MLAs Dhulipala Narendra, G Buchaiah Chowdary, Anita and others from the ruling party demanded that the member be suspended for one year.

Axe fell on Roja, when even the Chief Minister said that he was pained to see a woman MLA resort to such behaviour, using abusive and filthy language against the members of the ruling party and as well as the Chief Minister, besides adopting an aggressive posture and making gesticulations with a “frightening body language”. Stating that positions like Chief Minister, Speaker and the like are constitutional positions, he said if the members from the Opposition try to threaten them in the House then it would send a wrong message and bring down the dignity of the House.

He wanted the Speaker to take stern action against the member for her behaviour.

Following this, a motion was moved for her suspension and she was asked to leave the House on being suspended for a year. However, the member continued to stay put in the House for almost 30 minutes and left the House only after the Speaker said the House may have to treat this as contempt of the House and may take recourse to legal action as well.

Contesting the Speaker’s decision, leader of Opposition later told the media that they were examining the legal aspects. He said the Speaker does not have the right to suspend a member for one year.
