Hyderabad: The National Crime Records Bureau’s latest data revealed that AP topped the list in the country for outraging the modesty of women followed by Telangana State.
A total of 8,685 cases of outraging the modesty of women were reported across the country. While 2,200 were booked in Andhra Pradesh, 1,228 cases were registered in Telangana. Maharashtra with 1,119 cases stood at third position.
Among the registered cases, 32 cases in Telangana and three cases in AP related to harassment at workplace. As many as 168 cases in TS were reported on harassment at places other than workplace and 103 cases in AP. In public transport system, modesty of 179 women was outraged in Telangana and 24 in AP.
In 2014, 2,649 cases in AP, 1,575 cases in Maharashtra and 1,142 in Telangana were booked. The data released by NCRB, revealed that 4,616 assaults on women with an intention to outrage their modesty and 3,608 such cases in TS were reported. These cases were booked under section 354 A of IPC.
Among these, 1,070 cases were booked for sexual harassment in AP and 620 cases in TS. Of this, 491 cases in AP and 200 cases in TS were booked against those who attempted to disrobe women. A senior police officer from Telangana said that the rise in the number of cases registered in TS was a result of awareness brought among women about their rights.
“When women are coming out to complain about the attacks on them, it should be seen as a good sign. The initiatives taken by police like She teams, Hawk Eye App in Telangana and Abhayam App in Andhra Pradesh, have brought confidence among women, as they ensure anonymity of the victims, which was lacking earlier," said the officer.
