India Meteorological Department, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India is going to install the millennium city’s first Automatic Weather Station (AWS) at The NorthCap University (NCU). The University recently signed a Letter of Agreement (LOA) with Indian Meteorological Department for scientific cooperation and establishment of AWS which will be providing basic meteorological data.
According to IMD, there are about 2000 AWS dotting the entire length and breadth of the country, each costing around Rs 7 lakhs. It provides real time automatic measurement of meteorological parameters such as rain measurement, wind direction, wind speed, temperature, humidity, pressure and solar radiation. The University will install a display board which will show the various weather parameters on a daily basis. This will be beneficial to all the residents of Gurgaon, particularly farmers who will get to know about the weather conditions in advance.
“This association will help our students and faculty in various research and development activities related to atmospheric studies and help in meeting many requirements related to weather monitoring of Gurgaon.” said the Pro Vice-Chancellor of NCU, Brig. SK Sharma (Retd).
With increased demand for weather data & products and improving weather and climate services, it was felt that both the organizations should mutually cooperate in the field of environmental monitoring and research.
The meteorological and environmental data will be available for academic and research purposes to help public in general and for general awareness. The University will provide space for installing the AWS in a safe and secure environment. India Meteorological Department will provide necessary meteorological instrument and technical maintenance and guidance for the AWS.
Incidentally, the NorthCap University holds the first rank in private universities in Haryana and Delhi/NCR in a recently conducted survey by Ministry of Human Resource Development. The University had begun its journey towards imparting higher education in 1996 as an Institute of Technology and Management founded by Educate India Society. In recognition of its consistent record of excellence in academic performance, innovative practices, research oriented faculty and almost 100% placement of its graduates, it was granted the status of an autonomous university in 2010.
