Hyderabad: After Mission Bhageeratha, the State government has come up with another safe drinking water supply scheme to quench the thirst of people in water starved Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the State. According to sources, State Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA and UD) department has already finalised proposals to implement the new drinking water programme at a cost of Rs 2,400 crore in the selected municipalities.

In the first phase, 35 ULBs, including all 10 AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) towns would be covered. The total number of ULBs in the State are 67, excluding Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The selected 10 AMRUT towns are Khammam, Warangal, Nizamabad and Karimnagar Municipal Corporations and Ramagundam, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Adilabad, Suryapeta and Miryalaguda.

The MA&UD Department officials said that the other 25 municipalities have been selected for the new water supply scheme based on the availability of drinking water. The data collected by the Municipal Administration Department explained that the quantity of water being supplied to each household has been reduced to a mere 40 LPCD (Litres Per Capita per Day) from the 100 LPCD in the municipalities covered under the scheme. As per the national drinking water policy, the per capita availability of water at consumer end should be at least 135 LPCD.

The officials attributed the drying up of borewells due to scanty rainfall this monsoon season as the main reason for the drastic fall in the supply of quantum of water to each household. There was reduction of 30 per cent in water supply in the last six months in the 14 ULBs, they said. The official data collected by the MA&UD shows that people living in 33 ULBs have been receiving water only once in two days. The rate of supply was only 8 LPCD to 56 LPCD depending on water availability from both surface and power bores.

The municipalities covered under once in three-day water supply are Warangal, Jammikunta, Husnabad, Pedda-Amberpeta, Bhongir, Sadashivpet, Korutla, Nalgonda, Achampet, Ibrahimpatnam, Miryalaguda, Shadnagar, Wanaparthy and Yellandu. The rate of water supply was 5 LPCD to 49 LPCD. In four municipalities Devarakonda, Suryapet, Bellampally and Mahbubnagar - water has been supplied once in four days where the rate of supply was only 11 to 17 LPCD.
