Hyderabad: The central government declared the Charminar as Special Swachh Iconic Place. The iconic structure of the city was chosen for this award for the works taken up like developing and renovating other structures around Charminar, apart from swachh programmes. The Union Ministry of Drinking and Sanitation has declared this award. GHMC has been actively taking up works like pedestrian project at Charminar and also renovating the ‘char kamans’ the four entrances around Charminar. Apart from this, the special attractions of old city like Chudi Bazar, Murgi Chowk, Clock Tower, Julfikan Kaman and Mozamjahi Market were also given a facelift. Special funds were allotted for this purpose. The efforts of GHMC bagged this prestigious award.
The union ministry wrote a letter to GHMC Commissioner M Dana Kishore describing that the award was given for the activities like developing Charminar and surrounding areas as tourist friendly spots and implementing sanitation programmes under Swachh Baharat mission. The letter asked the commissioner to attend the fourth anniversary of Swachh Bharat mission, which is to be organised on October 2 at Pravasi Bharatiya Kendram in New Delhi to receive this award.
