The Forum for Good Governance calls for amendment in the Representation of People Act to bar the entry of people with criminal record from contesting elections
Hyderabad: Ten out of the 17 newly elected members of Lok Sabha from Telangana have been facing criminal cases. According to the affidavits submitted by the candidates while filing nominations, the candidates mentioned about the cases.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Adilabad with 52 cases has the maximum number of cases against him followed by A Revanth Reddy of Congress from Malkajgiri with 42 cases.
While Congress MP from Bhongir Komatireddy Venkat Reddy has 14 cases, Nalgonda MP and TPCC chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy has four cases.
Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi and Nama Nageswara Rao have five cases each against them. The BJP MP from Karimnagar has six cases, Nizamabad MP Dharmapuri Arvind and Mahbubabad MP M Kavitha have one case each, Zaheerabad MP BB Patil has three cases.
The Forum for Good Governance analysed the affidavits filed by contesting candidates and gave a report of antecedents of contesting candidates with a hope that people would reject the candidates having criminal cases.
Somehow this did not happen, said Forum for Good Governance Secretary M Padmanabha Reddy.
The Forum said that as per their analysis the voters do not bother about the criminal record of the candidate.
