Srikakulam: Members of Center for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) strongly opposed the closure of medical facility, operations and referral facilities at Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) dispensary and panel clinics in Srikakulam district. They staged a dharna at Chilakapalem Junction on National Highway-16 protesting ESIC decision on it on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, CITU State vice-president Duppala Govinda Rao, division president and secretaries, N Venkata Ramana and P Tejeswara Rao said that by issuing an order, all the facilities to be waived at ESIC dispensary and panel clinics in the district, workers have to go to Visakhapatnam for treatment.

In Srikakulam district, a dispensary at Pydibhimavaram and four panel clinics at Srikakulam, Rajam, Mandasa and Etcherla were working. In total, 25,300 workers were members in the ESIC from Srikakulam district alone.

They lamented that the ESIC took the decision unilaterally without considering health and safety aspects of the workers. Treatment at Visakhapatnam would be difficult as it may lead to loss of lives during emergency and health risk due to journey time from here, they stated.

They demanded intervention of district ministers K Atchannaidu and K Kala Venkata Rao, MP and MLAs to restore ongoing facilities at ESIC dispensary and panel clinics.

They also demanded to establish 100 beds hospital at Pydibhimavaram with specialist treatment by appointing enough medical and laboratory staff. On the occasion, the CITU leaders submitted a memorandum to ESIC director for insurance and health services P Rama Kotayya who visited industries at Chilakapalem on Thursday.
