Vijayawada: Minister for Sports, Law and Justice Kollu Ravindra said the State government was giving top priority to sports and encouraging the children to participate in various events.
He was the chief guest at the Children’s Day celebrations conducted by Vijayawada Municipal Corporation on Wednesday. Water Resources Minister Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao hoisted the national flag and received guard of honour from the NCC cadets of the VMC schools.
Mayor Koneru Sridhar, Municipal Commissioner J Nivas, Arjuna awardee and ace archer Jyothy Surekha, Deputy Educational Officer K Durga Prasad, teachers and several hundred students participated in the celebrations. Cultural programmes conducted by children enthralled the audience.
The VMC staff conducted special coaching classes to perform various types of programmes on Children’s Day at IGMC stadium. Prizes were distributed to the students, who won competitions in athletics, kabaddi, volleyball, throw ball, drawing, essay writing and other events.
Ministers Kollu Ravindra and Devineni Umamaheswara Rao presented the prizes to the winners and congratulated the VMC mayor, commissioner and teachers for successfully conducting the Children’s Day in a grand manner.
