Yakutpura: A rather weird problem is affecting the locals in some parts of Old City nowadays. Some people are doing unauthorised scrap business in Lalithabagh Railway Bridge, Mekalamandi, Sardar Patel Nagar, Uppuguda, Kandikalgate, Rein Bazar and other areas has been a major concern for the people here.

It has been noticed that some people were carrying out the unauthorised business of scrap in the residential areas which is directly affecting the health of locals. Filth, garbage coupled with foul smell in the residential areas is a major problem in these areas. The businessmen involved in this trade are believed to be supporters of some political leaders in the area. Some people are doing their business at a government land near Mekalamandi of Gaulipura and authorities are turning a blind eye to this.

Consequential to such business activities in the residential areas has been affecting the public health and people are complaining of official apathy. A local from Gaulipura, Srinivas, said that the foul smell emanating out of the burning scrap material was unbearable. He said that scrap is nothing, but a mix of waste material and such stuff should not be allowed to be sorted out in the residential areas, he said. He said that several complaints were submitted at district Collector office and GHMC, but no action was taken so far.

Another person in the same area alleged that the scrap wires, tyres and stuff was being burnt daily in the night time and it almost suffocates the residents living nearby. He said that an open land is being used by the businessmen violating the norms for waste management. Locals have demanded that such scrap shops and businesses must be stopped and be fined.
