Hyderabad: It was in January 1980 when former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi contested from Medak seat and got elected to Seventh Lok Sabha. Almost 38 years later, the Congress party has selected the same location in Sangareddy from where Indira Gandhi addressed her election meeting to hold 'Telangana Praja Garjana' to be addressed by AICC Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on June 1.
"Lot of sentiments are attached with the venue of Telangana Praja Garjana. It proved to be the launch pad for the revival of Congress party across the country in 1980 General Election. Indira Gandhi picked Medak as her second constituency to contest the election. Although she registered a landslide victory from Rae Bareilli too, she had retained the Medak seat. She served as country's Prime Minister as Medak MP and remained so till she was assassinated in 1984," said TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy.
Uttam Kumar Reddy said the Congress party did lot of brainstorming before finalising the venue to hold a public meeting to be addressed by Rahul Gandhi. Instead of only going for show of strength, the TPCC finalised a venue which also had strong sentimental value. The present venue emotionally links each and every Congress worker and sympathiser with the party and its leadership, he said.
The TPCC chief informed that Indira Gandhi's association with Medak was very strong and she had maintained it till her last breath. Similarly, AICC President Sonia Gandhi turned the 60-year-old dream into a reality by granting statehood to Telangana. He said Rahul Gandhi has been continuing the legacy of Nehru-Gandhi family by maintaining same kind of bond with people of Telangana.
Uttam Kumar Reddy also informed that the party would be organising a photo exhibition on Indira Gandhi's election from Medak Lok Sabha seat at the public meeting's venue. Rahul Gandhi will first watch the photo exhibition and then begin his speech after paying floral tributes to Indira Gandhi .
"We are confident that Rahul's speech at Sangareddy will be historic. Besides exposing the failures of BJP government at the Centre and TRS government in the State, Rahul will also unveil the roadmap for Telangana Congress for next elections," he said while adding that the AICC Vice-President will release the charge-sheet on the occasion.
The TPCC is making elaborate arrangements for the public meeting which is likely to be attended by lakhs of Congress workers and common people from across Telangana State, Uttam added.
