Hyderabad: The Congress party on Wednesday demanded that the Telangana government must bring back stranded gulf labourers at free of cost to the state. Addressing a press conference, All India Congress Committee (AICC) national spokesperson Dr Sravan Dasoju said that the labourers who went to Gulf were suffering a lot due to Covid-19 pandemic.

He said that he had written an open letter, along with TPCC NRI cell convener Nangi Devender Reddy, to the state government in this regard. He stated that according to Ministry of External Affairs, there are more than 12-15 lakh labourers from Telangana, including both men and women, in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. It is estimated that they remit about Rs 1500 crore per month to the state.

Due to collapsing oil prices and the Coronavirus, Gulf countries are reducing their economic activities. Many of the labourers are being laid off by their managements. Sravan demanded that in these circumstances, the Government of Telangana should coordinate with the central government and bring back those who want to return.
